On January 16, 1997, Ennis was fatally shot while fixing a flat tire during a robbery attempt on the side of the road. The tragedy profoundly affected his family and the nation. Mikhail Markhasev, the 18-year-old responsible for the murder, was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
